The fact that light shines in the darkness is what makes light so fantastic. On a family vacation, we visited Mammoth Cave, and during one part of the tour, they turned off the lights in our part of the cave, and we were in total darkness. Then our guide turned on their flashlight, which dispelled the darkness instantly.
Where there is light, the darkness must flee. As people, we love the days when there is plenty of sunshine and dread the gloomy days. Light is amazing. Yet it is one of those gifts in life we can take for granted.
The Lord Created Light
On the very first day of creation, the Lord created light. Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day. [1]
The Lord brought light into the world in His perfect timing. As people, our lives our separated by being awake and asleep. In the darkness, we like to sleep and be awake when it is light. Without light, we could not live, for food could not grow, nor could we see the Lord’s creation. As people, we depend on light daily and can thank the Lord for the gift of sight that relies on light.
Jesus is the Light
In His perfect timing, the Lord created light and later sent His Son Jesus into the world as spiritual light. John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads to life [2]
Just as light enables us to walk in the physical, faith in Jesus as our Savior allows us to walk in the light spiritually. When we are blind, we don’t know where to go, and when we are spiritually blind, we also don’t know where to go. When we place our faith in Jesus as our Savior, He enables us to walk in the light that leads to eternal life. Jesus is like a lighthouse in our life, leading and guiding us to fulfill the Lord’s plans.
Just as Jesus is the Light of the world, we as believers can also be a light in a spiritually dark world. John 5:15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where gives light to everyone in the house. 16 Similarly, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. [3] The way you allow your light to shine may not make the news, but it will make more of a difference than you can see with your eyes.
