As only God can, His mercy fills the hungry. If you are hungry for God today, He wants to give you His mercy and grace. Those who seek God don’t necessarily get gold or silver but receive a relationship with Him.
Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit when she went to visit Elizabeth. John lept for joy in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary entered the house. The angel Gabriel had promised John would be filled with the Holy Spirit before birth. This enabled John to sense the presence of the unborn Messiah spiritually.
Mary praised God and shared the simple message of the riches of a faithful believer. Luke 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.[1] The world tells us we will be happy when we fill ourselves with the riches and power of this world, but this is a lie. The enemy uses the pursuit of worldly things to distract people from the true riches, the Lord.
God Turns the World’s Expectations Upside Down
Mary’s song tells us that God takes the world’s values and expectations and turns them upside down. Jesus tells us His mission. Matthew 20:28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. [2] When Jesus came to this earth, He faced the rejection of the proud, the religious leaders, and the powerful.
Our enemy, satan, works to deceive people about what is essential in life. Jesus would, throughout his ministry, lift up those society did not value. Jesus encountered a demon-possessed man in Mark chapter five who lived in the tombs, but he was not beyond the reach of Jesus. After this man was delivered, Jesus sent him to tell others what He had done for him, and he did. In God’s mercy, this man was hungry, but now he was filled.
The Lord Lifts the Lowly Today
Our Savior continues to lift the lowly and downtrodden today. While the Lord is mighty and merciful, He is ruthless against pride and injustice and sensitive to the needs of individuals. Mary’s song captured the very heart of God, who seeks to redeem sinful people.
While the people were looking for a Messiah who would save them from the Romans, Jesus was bringing the message of salvation to save them eternally. Jesus’ message of salvation would deliver people from the bondage of sin and greed for power and wealth. Jesus delights in freeing us from the chains of the enemy.
The writer of Hebrews says it best. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.
