The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

God keeps His promises. Mary and Elizabeth knew this as God did what the angel had said in each of their circumstances. Elizabeth was pregnant with John the Baptist, and Mary was pregnant with Jesus. Elizabeth commented Mary. Luke 1:45 You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.”[1]

Mary responded by praising the Lord and reflecting on how she is indeed blessed that the Lord used such a lowly servant. Mary also spoke of the power of the Lord and how He brings the proud to nothing. Near the end of her song of praise, Mary reflected on God’s promises that go back to the days of Abraham. Luke 1:55 For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever. [2]

God Made Promises to Abraham

God had made promises to Abraham. Genesis 12:I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” [3]

The Lord kept these promises. Abraham’s descendants became the nation of Israel. It was through this nation that Jesus would be born. And through the work of Jesus on the cross, all the families on earth are blessed. Although the Savior would be born many generations later, God is faithful. We can remind ourselves how faithful God is by continually reading His Word.

Promises of God in the New Testament

  • Romans 1: 17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life. [4]
  • Romans 8: 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.[5]
  • 2 Corinthians 1: 3bGod is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.[6]
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! [7]
  • Ephesians 1:All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.[8]

One thing we can be sure of is that God keeps His promises. One day, we will step into eternity, and if you have faith in Jesus as your Savior, you will enter heaven’s gates to spend eternity. John 3:16 reminds us of the heavenly blessing of having faith in Jesus. John 3:16 For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.[9] We can sing like Mary because God keeps His promises.
