The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Today we want to explore the topic of God speaking through dreams. Have you ever wondered why God would speak to us in dreams? Perhaps you have received a dream which seemed to be from the Lord. God often uses dreams when He wants to communicate with us personally.

In the Scriptures, many people received dreams from the Lord, such as Jacob, Joseph, Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, and the Apostle Paul. Today we want to unfold the dream of the cupbearer imprisoned with Joseph and give an overview of why God gives dreams.

Joseph’s Fellow Prisoner, the Cupbearer, had a Dream

Joseph was falsely imprisoned, but he made the best of his situation, and the warden trusted him enough to put him in charge of fellow prisoners. One day the Pharoah became offended and placed the chief baker and cupbearer in the prison where Joseph was. The warden placed the cupbearer and the chief baker under Joseph’s care to look after them. One day both looked worried, and Joseph inquired why.

Genesis 40:And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can tell us what they mean.” “Interpreting dreams is God’s business,” Joseph replied. “Go ahead and tell me your dreams.”

So, the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream first. “In my dream,” he said, “I saw a grapevine in front of me. 10 The vine had three branches that began to bud and blossom, and soon it produced clusters of ripe grapes. 11 I was holding Pharaoh’s wine cup in my hand, so I took a cluster of grapes and squeezed the juice into the cup. Then I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”

12 “This is what the dream means,” Joseph said. “The three branches represent three days. 13 Within three days, Pharaoh will lift you up and restore you to your position as his chief cupbearer.[1]

Why Would God Give Us Dreams?

During a dream, we are at rest, and God has a chance to communicate with us as we are quiet. Don’t be afraid to pray and ask Him to give you dreams. Dreams from God can provide us with instruction, spiritual insight, warnings, prophetic insights into a future event, and general communication.

A God dream is the Lord breaking into our lives to communicate to us in a way only He could. It is a good idea to pray to remember your dreams and then journal those you believe come from God. After you journal your dream, pray and ask the Lord to give you revelation. Dreams are symbolic and may be hard to understand. Job 33:14For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. [2]
